Founder & CTO: Vince Baranauskas, Ph.D

Dr. Vince Baranauskas serves as Chief Technology Officer of MacroVation™, where he leads the company’s research, materials innovation, and advanced technology development programs. With more than two decades of experience in federal research and development, Dr. Baranauskas has built a distinguished track record of conceiving, developing, and transitioning advanced materials technologies from early ideation through prototype development, qualification testing, and operational evaluation.

Throughout his career, Dr. Baranauskas has successfully secured and led federally funded R&D programs from agencies including SOCOM, DARPA, the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force. His work focuses on the development of high-performance and sustainable polymer systems, including thermoplastics, thermosets, elastomers, multifunctional composites, and engineered foams designed for demanding operational environments.

Dr. Baranauskas has extensive experience collaborating with operational end users to translate advanced materials research into practical solutions. His previous work includes the development of specialized polymer systems and protective materials used in equipment supporting special operations communities and Navy divers, addressing challenging maritime and cold-water operational conditions. These programs progressed from early materials ideation through field evaluation with operational users.

He has also led the development of advanced protective materials that achieved NFPA 1971 certification for structural firefighting gloves, with testing and evaluation conducted in collaboration with first responders and fire departments across the United States through federally supported programs. These efforts demonstrate his ability to bridge the gap between laboratory materials science and real-world performance requirements.

At MacroVation™, Dr. Baranauskas leads interdisciplinary teams advancing next-generation materials technologies that support defense, industrial, and sustainability-focused applications. His expertise spans polymer chemistry, composite design, scalable materials processing, and advanced manufacturing approaches that enable rapid technology maturation and commercialization.

Dr. Baranauskas’ innovations have contributed to multiple technologies successfully transitioning into commercial and operational markets. His work has been recognized with prestigious honors including the R&D 100 Award, widely regarded as one of the most significant recognitions in applied science and engineering.

Through his leadership, MacroVation™ continues to develop advanced materials platforms that address critical national needs while advancing sustainable and high-performance material technologies.

President: David Sherrer, M.S.

David serves as MacroVation's™ President. He has enjoyed a remarkable career marked by innovation and entrepreneurial success, particularly in the field of innovative materials. His journey began after earning two BS degrees (Physics and Philosophy) and then a MS in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. In 1996, he founded his first company, ACT (Advanced Coating Technologies), which later evolved into ACT Microdevices and was eventually re-branded as Haleos, Inc. Under his leadership, Haleos became a leading manufacturer of MEMS-based fiberoptic components and optoelectronic hardware, including sustainable materials such as hermetic silicon micro-packages for laser transmitters and integrated optics. In less than 18 months, Haleos implemented SAP, certified ISO 9000-2000, filed 120 US and international patents, shipped over 2M AR-coated microlenses to Lucent Technologies for their LASER2000 program, and grew to a $20M/year run rate. Haleos was acquired by the $8B Rohm and Haas (ROH) - now Dow Chemical. David had a tenure at Rohm and Haas post-acquisition that saw him win a DARPA program: 3D-MicroElectrical RF Systems (MERFS), which created PolyStrata - a microwave/mm wave packaging platform that was awarded a Disruptive Manufacturing Technologies (DMT). In 2008, David purchased his company back from Rohm and Haas and founded Nuvotronics, refocusing the technology on radar and wireless systems for defense and telecom utilizing thermoplastic polymers and Polystrata. As President and CEO, the company amassed a portfolio of over 50 new patents and expanded its operations to include an 80,000 square foot facility in NC, along with offices in VA, MA, and CA. The company achieved full AS9100D Certification in 2017. David stepped down as CEO in 2018 but continued serving as a board member and consultant until the company's acquisition by Cubic Corporation in March 2019. His visionary leadership and commitment to innovation continue to inspire MacroVation's pursuit of excellence.
